PB&J Fund

In an effort to learn more about how hunger affects youth in my community, I volunteered once a week at the PB&J Fund in Downtown Charlottesville. The students in the class I teach are from Friendship Court, an area of Charlottesville where a majority of students qualify for free and reduced lunch.

Honor at UVA

Honor has been a focal point of the University of Virginia for 177 years. The living and learning community at UVA is built around the Community of Trust established by the Honor Constitution in 1825. Honor at UVA is entirely student-run, and I was selected to join the team of 98 Honor Support Officers in the Fall of my first year at UVA (2019).

Alpha Kappa Psi Professional Business Fraternity

AKPsi is recognized as the premier developer of principled business leaders. I participated in an 8-week training process, during which I completed various group projects under the umbrellas of finance, marketing, accounting, and entrepreneurship.

Engaged Learning Mentor

During my first year, I took in a unique writing class that required all of its students to volunteer in the Charlottesville community through Madison House, the volunteer center for students at the University of Virginia. After completing the course, my professor asked me to stay on and work with her as a semi teaching assistant. My official title is an Engaged Learning Mentor; my role is to serve as a liaison between Madison House and the students, connecting them with opportunities, offering advice, and assisting Professor Stephenson in planning course activities.

What is Engaged Learning, and why am I so passionate about it? Volunteer work has always been a huge part of my life, so I welcomed the opportunity to take a class that incorporated volunteering, but I did not know the impact that using volunteering to complement my coursework would have. Every day we go to class and learn by listening to a teacher talk about situations we might face outside the classroom, whether that be in the community, in the workplace, or just in life. Engaged Learning takes those conversations outside of the classroom and allows students to experience first hand the gravity of these classroom conversations. I wholeheartedly believe that Engaged Learning is the best way to learn not only because of the positive impact on the students who participate in these courses but also because of the positive impact these students can have volunteering in the community.

WORK EXPERIENCE

  • Centers for Disease Control and Prevention | Intern

  • Cadence Bank | Credit Analyst Intern

  • UpDog Smoothies | Marketing Specialist

CDC Internship

I interned for four weeks at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta partnering with the Lead in Library Transformation. My most impactful contributions include:

  • Conducting an Observational Study of Patron Behavior in the Library, the data I collected is being used in presentations to senior CDC Leaders to drive and fund future Library Transformation initiatives.
  • Working with Leaders in the CDC Community encouraging them to use the CDC Library as an additional workspace.
  • Compiling content and designing a flyer advertising Leadership Resources and Services available in the CDC Library.
  • Finding innovative ways to foster collaboration among CDC Scientists to improve their work. For example, a versatile workspace with moving whiteboards and flexible seating designed for impromptu meetings.

At the end of my four weeks, I drafted, memorized, and delivered a seven-minute presentation to 50 people about my experience and impact.

Guided Scientific Research

After interning at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, I began my Guided Scientific Research class in which I utilized my many connections from the CDC to identify a research question, make a hypothesis, and design a study to test my hypothesis. The central issue I identified was the low vaccination rates in high school communities against influenza. I set out to test whether multiple intervention methods are more effective than one when convincing adolescents to get their flu vaccine, specifically in a high school/academic environment. I decided to test contemporary means of communicating health information.

In January of 2019, I was selected to present my research at the 44th Georgia Junior Science & Humanities Symposium.

Cadence Bank Headquarters | Intern

In the summer after graduating high school, I interned at Cadence Bank at their Headquarters in Houston, Texas, as a modified Credit Analyst Intern. During my three weeks at Cadence Bank, I worked closely with the Vice President of Syndication to design a database of all syndication deals in which Cadence has participated. Additionally, I rotated with the full-time Credit Analysts in Training to presentations by different sectors of the bank.

UpDog Juices and Smoothies Marketing Specialist

After my plans to study abroad in Valencia, Spain were canceled due to the Coronavirus. I applied for a position as the Marketing Specialist for a local small business. As the Marketing Specialist, I began by consulting the store owners about their goals for their business. I then developed, implemented, and tracked marketing plans such as monthly specials, social media, and events. Additionally, I organized sponsored events and fostered relationships with local businesses to generate partnerships. Finally, I developed and created marketing collateral, such as signage, high-quality product images, and high-quality customer pictures, as well as designing social media content. After three months as a Marketing Specialist, customer engagement, sales, and foot traffic in the store increased.

Girl Scouts Gold Award

Wonderful Days Preschool provides a tuition-free early learning program to children whose families fall below the federally defined poverty line. Within the last ten years, the program has modified its’ curriculum to include teaching English so that these children can enter the public school system with knowledge of classroom edict, essential reading and math skills, as well as a proficiency in the English language. Working with the children in the classroom and as a board member, I have done everything from sitting on the floor reading books to redesigning the website. I also have gathered school supplies, raised money for signage, car magnets, started a social media campaign, “Early Education is Essential,” created a brochure in both English and in Spanish and worked on the main fund-raiser, the “Wonderful Days of Winter” 5K and Fun Run. Although I have made an impact on this program, it does not compare to the impact these children and the people who work with them have made on me. They have shown me that given the right support, a child can discover a love of learning that will propel them forward on their path to success.

The Girl Scout Gold Award requires 80+ hours of service towards the cause of our choice.
