The Invisible Issue of Food Insecurity
I was selected as one of ten students to speak at TEDx UVA's annual Student Speaker Conference. Below is the full TEDx UVA Speech.
In an effort to learn more about how hunger affects youth in my community, I volunteered once a week at the PB&J Fund in Downtown Charlottesville. The students in the class I teach are from Friendship Court, an area of Charlottesville where a majority of students qualify for free and reduced lunch.
I interned for four weeks at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta partnering with the Lead in Library Transformation. My most impactful contributions include:
At the end of my four weeks, I drafted, memorized, and delivered a seven-minute presentation to 50 people about my experience and impact.
After interning at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, I began my Guided Scientific Research class in which I utilized my many connections from the CDC to identify a research question, make a hypothesis, and design a study to test my hypothesis. The central issue I identified was the low vaccination rates in high school communities against influenza. I set out to test whether multiple intervention methods are more effective than one when convincing adolescents to get their flu vaccine, specifically in a high school/academic environment. I decided to test contemporary means of communicating health information.
In January of 2019, I was selected to present my research at the 44th Georgia Junior Science & Humanities Symposium.
Flyer distributed across all divisions of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
In the summer after graduating high school, I interned at Cadence Bank at their Headquarters in Houston, Texas, as a modified Credit Analyst Intern. During my three weeks at Cadence Bank, I worked closely with the Vice President of Syndication to design a database of all syndication deals in which Cadence has participated. Additionally, I rotated with the full-time Credit Analysts in Training to presentations by different sectors of the bank.
After my plans to study abroad in Valencia, Spain were canceled due to the Coronavirus. I applied for a position as the Marketing Specialist for a local small business. As the Marketing Specialist, I began by consulting the store owners about their goals for their business. I then developed, implemented, and tracked marketing plans such as monthly specials, social media, and events. Additionally, I organized sponsored events and fostered relationships with local businesses to generate partnerships. Finally, I developed and created marketing collateral, such as signage, high-quality product images, and high-quality customer pictures, as well as designing social media content. After three months as a Marketing Specialist, customer engagement, sales, and foot traffic in the store increased.
Wonderful Days Preschool provides a tuition-free early learning program to children whose families fall below the federally defined poverty line. Within the last ten years, the program has modified its’ curriculum to include teaching English so that these children can enter the public school system with knowledge of classroom edict, essential reading and math skills, as well as a proficiency in the English language. Working with the children in the classroom and as a board member, I have done everything from sitting on the floor reading books to redesigning the website. I also have gathered school supplies, raised money for signage, car magnets, started a social media campaign, “Early Education is Essential,” created a brochure in both English and in Spanish and worked on the main fund-raiser, the “Wonderful Days of Winter” 5K and Fun Run. Although I have made an impact on this program, it does not compare to the impact these children and the people who work with them have made on me. They have shown me that given the right support, a child can discover a love of learning that will propel them forward on their path to success.
The Girl Scout Gold Award requires 80+ hours of service towards the cause of our choice.
I was selected out of 210 Leaders in Training to write and deliver a speech about my experience as a Leader in Training at YMCA Camp High Harbour. I gave a 7-minute speech at the Infinite Energy Center in front of 400 people from all across the southeast.
